The defence industry or arms industry is the global industry and trade, which produces and sells weapons, military goods and technology. It consists of the government and the commercial industry, both involved in the research, development, production and maintenance of military material, equipment and facilities. Weapon-producing companies mainly supply weapons for the armed forces of the countries. Certain government departments are also active in the arms industry with the purchase and sale of weapons, ammunition and other military objects. Products include guns, ammunition, missiles, military aircraft, military vehicles, ships, electronic systems, and more. The defence industry is also working on research and development.
In the Netherlands there are around 250 companies in the field of the production and export of weapons or weapon parts. The Netherlands is in the top 10 of arms exporters. The government spends hundreds of millions of euros annually in subsidies on this industry, which employs around 12,000 people. TNO is the best known and largest research institute that deals with weapons. The National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) and Stork are involved in the development of the Joint Strike Fighter. Shipyard De Schelde (owned by Damen Shipyards) is supplier of naval ships to Indonesia, among others. These ships are often equipped with Thales command and communication equipment.
Renewal and replacement
After years of spending cuts, now is the time for much needed renewal and replacement. For example, in the coming years a lot of extra money will be spent on overdue maintenance of equipment including: the Bushmaster, Fennek, CV90 and armored howitzer vehicles, the Apache combat helicopters and various large ships that have been repaired with emergency solutions in recent years.
